I'll see something happening, then try to figure out how to compensate for it. I have experienced strange things like you describe at BR-50 matches, things that don't make sense. If I want some good silhouette ammo, Eley Target or Club will hit every target I correctly point the gun at. I know that if I want good benchrest ammo, it will be Eley Match. I don't pay much attention to that and just randomly pick something without testing it. When the rimfire ammo distributors get in bunches of new Eley, they will list the lot numbers and velocities of each one, as well as how many boxes they have of each. More like whether RWS is more accurate than CCI, for example. I should have said each brand and type of ammo instead of lot, so one wouldn't assume I was referring to lot numbers. I no longer compete that seriously, as it has just become too cost-prohibitive. Although that is certainly the way the serious BR shooters do it. Another example, an ARA shooter takes their under performing lots to a match for warmup, fowling purposes. Let's say you have been shooting your favorite lot for weeks now, same rifle, same rest, same bench, and all of a sudden on this particular day, for two or three hours the groups consistently tighten up. Even when shooting in Denver I never could tell if it was me or the altitude that made a difference relative to group size. Had a job where we had plants in Europe so I could go to those places and compete.
